What did I do wrong here?

Went out with the wife and kid to visit some Xmas cribs. When leaving the parking lot, the XUV 300 ahead decided to back up into my car. Ended up bumping into it. Broke the clips to the bumper and the left headlight and bent the left hand side quarter panel. The sad thing is my car isn't even month old. What could I have done better? I already had almost a whole car gap ahead of me. I'll get it fixed but I'm so frustrated right now. Who would have seen this coming?
