Ghajani (2008)- no one knows what Sanjay looks like

Was this actually possible in India in 2008? I was confused how no one seemed to know what he looked like. Google existed back then, couldn't people have just looked him up? Or wouldn't he be in newspapers/news? Or is this just played up for comedy, and it's unrealistic.
