Sui Dhaga is wholesome but it also sucks!
Watched it yesterday and I looked for discussions on Reddit, with many people calling it an underrated gem. The thing is, it works at what its intending to do (feel good) but it is basic and bland in execution. There is so much of wasted potential. The makers tried to make it a rag-to-riches feel-good movie and a family comedy at the same time and excelled at none. The film is truly basic and makes 0 sense. Varun's character is god gifted at tailoring which is fine I guess. He and his wife start a tailoring business and at the very beginning, they become extremely god gifted at fashion designing without any past experience or interest. So, much so, that their first collection wins a fashion design contest. The film also has a "Made in India" theme which also has wasted potential. First of all, an Indian brand labeling "Made in China" makes no sense. Made in <Insert European Company> here would make sense but faking made in china is stupid. It makes the item cheaper and not more expensive. Anyways, the film could have easily worked better if they showed the wife having an eye for fashion and designing. (A similar theme is explored in Lapata Ladies). That way Varun's characters tailoring and Anushka's characters designing would become the deadly combo. Or, if they made fashion that resembled Indian grassroots styling. Instead, even though they are from modest backgrounds and have never taken an interest in high-fashion and wear simple clothes, all of their items are high fashion and western wear. I think a lot of potential is wasted here especially when the "Made in India" part is emphasized. They should have made mostly made khadi ethnic wear. Its like the makers took the premise and cooked the most basic feel good story possible that involves humiliation, poverty p--n, and a talent contest.4
