I can’t get over Laila Majnu
Stumbled upon this movie a few days ago and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it and really need to talk about it haha Acting, Writing, Direction, Music…literally everything was exceptional 💗 I think the reason this movie moved me so much is because it’s a beautiful depiction of divine love. I didn’t know the details of the Laila Majnu folk tale but knew it was similar to Romeo and Juliet. It was clear that this was yet another movie about two lovers not being able to unite because of the world. I was also half expecting them to unite in death like Ram Leela. But to me, this movie was not about them uniting in after life but instead of uniting with God. If you believe in the philosophy of one true God and how Self-realization is the ultimate form of liberation and state of eternal bliss…this movie was a depiction of that. It was how they found God and divine love through their love for each other. Even though we feel sad that they didn’t get to live a life together in human form…if you realize that our human existence is an illusion and that the ultimate goal is to unite with the infinite consciousness, then this film’s ending was happier than any “regular happy endings” where the couple gets together and build a life here on earth. My absolute favorite moments were: - When Qais tells the men praying that they were also talking to their beloved. It showed so beautifully that we’re all insane for we love and believe in things others can’t see…it’s just that some forms of insanity are normalized. - When Qais says he sees Laila in everything, it clearly means that he is now able to see God in everything. Laila is nothing but God, and this is indicated by how beautifully he goes from saying Laila to La Ilaha. He has transcended to a state where he can feel love and joy without the physical presence of another person. He was no longer fixating his love on one person or worshipping one person, he felt love all around him and inside him. When you lose your sense of self, your ability to discriminate and your ability to love one but not the other…it seems like insanity to a rational mind but is really a spiritual evolution. - Lastly, it was so beautiful to see Laila recognize this. After all, she, too, had been so deeply in love. To me, this movie showcased how romantic love has the potential to transform into infinite love. It’s rare to find a work of art that touches you so deeply and I don’t think I’ll ever get over this film. It’s such a gem and I’m so grateful to everyone who contributed to it and I’m grateful it found me 💗💗💗5
