Need Advice : Is such reaction common in Bihari families

I am a 25-year-old woman, financially independent, working at a reputed tech company in Bangalore. Recently, during a conversation with my mom about potential marriage proposals, I decided to be honest with her. I told her that I would choose whom I marry. Hearing this, she became visibly anxious and started asking pointed questions, like whether I had already chosen someone. I admitted that I did—there’s a man I deeply care for and have decided to marry. I also mentioned that he is financially well-off, thinking this might reassure her since that’s often a concern for parents. However, when I revealed that he belongs to a different caste (he is OBC while I am from a General category family), her reaction was extreme. She was visibly upset, saying things like, “No one in our family has ever done this,” and that I would tarnish my father’s pride and honor in society. She even said this news might cause him to have a heart attack. She insisted they could find a “better match” for me and said many other things that left me feeling hurt and conflicted. Although I stayed strong during the conversation, as soon as the call ended, I broke down in tears. Now, I can’t help but wonder if such a reaction is normal in love marriages, especially in traditional families. My biggest concern isn’t just standing up for my choice but also ensuring I don’t harm my family’s health or well-being in the process. Any advice or similar experience would be really helpful.
