Sad about a rejection letter..

Hi, I got a rejection from a job, that I have been so hopeful about. However, the letter from the company didn't exactly state I was rejected. It was more like they put my candidature on hold as they have been interviewing other candidates. Is it just a sugar-coated rejection or do I still have hope? Is it unprofessional to call HR and confirm this? Please help.
