Can gifting be a way to say sorry or is it a poor choice?

So I had this big fight with my wife and said something below the belt which probably I shouldn’t have. It was too touchy for her and she had told me something in confidence which I ended up using in the fight. If I say sorry along with a gift, will it look cheap?
