Advice for managing team of women in India
Hey all, I’m an American guy, and I recently started managing a small team that works in India a few months ago. They are all women. I think things are going fine, but I sense 3 challenges so far. The first being I have never been to India, and I don’t really know the culture, so I am not as familiar with challenges that might be rooted in such. Second, they are all women, so I am probably not as aware of their unique challenges. Lastly, I’m remote so we can’t talk face to face easily and the time difference limits our interactions. I guess I’m curious to hear from women who work corporate jobs in India. Is there advice you would have for being a good manager in this situation? Things I can watch out for and empathize with? I think our main issue is that they sometimes seem to hesitate to raise problems they have to me like they think it might upset me. I try to assure them they won’t. Another is they seem very worried about what other people in their office will think about things even after being assured the opinions of those people don’t really matter to their job. Any input is welcome!4
