Why are railway stations not functioning like airports/bus?

Why is there no security like there are in Airports? I have heard many people that travel in trains don’t have a ticket. I understand it will be a little tough but I don’t think its impossible to implement Keeping doors / gates narrow with security to check ticket before letting them in? I’m also curious to know why is the railway system the way it is.
