What can I (as a man) help my friend who is struggling with PCOS?
A friend of mine has been struggling with irregular periods, cramps, and other issues. Like getting periods twice a month with extreme cramp. Most of the time we meet at parties or get-togethers, she seems like she's on the verge of crying. The pain reflects on her face, but almost everyone thinks she's just "asking for sympathy." Older people tell her to "smile more," "be positive," or "lose some weight." I didn't have any idea about her struggle and made the same thoughtless comment, "smile more," which led to her breakdown. I apologized and asked what was wrong. She shared that her sisters, although sympathetic, don't seem to understand her struggles. She's seen multiple gynecologists who, frankly, were unhelpful, suggesting she lose weight, have a positive mindset, and exercise daily. They implied it was all in her mind. (For the record, she's not overweight.) I felt terrible for my thoughtless comment and want to make it right. I want to support her, but honestly, I'm clueless about PCOS and women's health. Can you help me learn more about PCOS and how to support her in coping with it or improving her life? Please help me out.4
