Do men often only refer to girls they find attractive?

I’ve noticed I’ve been in India for a few weeks and when I am with my friends or relatives who are also girls if I am talking to a waiter or clerk at a store, if my sister or friend come they will start ignoring me and talking with them. It has happened several times.
