Keep it dipped in hot water with soap for an hour or so. Then take a soft cloth and wipe it clean. If there is still some form of residue left, take a soft unused toothbrush and try scrubbing it off with that. This usually works with Jade.

Next day after every Pooja, take care to wipe the Lingam clean again to avoid residue built up. This does not effect the Pooja ritual.

I remember during my childhood there were tribals (narikuravars) I think, used to hunt cats, crows etc for food. If we let them know that a particular cat is our pet cat, they won't touch it. Not sure it's the same in your case.
