As a North Indian tired of seeing hate between us, I’d like know from South Indians themselves whats wrong? And how to make it right?
I’m not a North Indian. I’m an Indian Bengali that spent a brief amount of time in India, and I now reside in Canada. However, I can see why there is a negative opinion about north Indians among south Indians. It’s very evident here in Canada as well.
1. As a Bengali, I take offence when a north Indian insists I must speak in Hindi. It happened to me quite often when I was working in Bangalore; my bosses were north Indians from Delhi, UP, and Rajasthan. It’s happened with me in Canada when some north Indian folks are always aghast about the fact that I don’t speak or understand Hindi all that well.
2. A lot of north Indians believe their version of Hinduism is the correct version. I beg to differ. Different cultures follow interpret the religion in their own way and follow them accordingly. I’m not religious anymore, but when I was, I used to eat meat during religious festivals. Why? That’s how I was raised and such was, and still is, the custom in my family. Over here, during Diwali, I was routinely told by north Indian folks that I must not eat meat. Why do you get to dictate what I, an atheist, eat on an occasion I have no inclination of celebrating anymore?
3. Now, I eat a variety of meats, including beef, pork, shark, and pigeon. South Indians and northeast Indians never have anything to say, but in my case, it’s always north Indians who exhibit disgust at that fact and claim I’m insulting their religious beliefs. How am I doing that? I’m not forcing you to eat my food. In fact, I’d prefer if you didn’t eat my food because I don’t like to share.
At the end of the day, it boils down to the fact that north Indians, in general, either fail or refuse to understand that if you pick two Indians out of a group, they are going to be vastly different, culturally or otherwise. Their trying to impose the fact that being Indian means having a rigid set of identity checkboxes is what annoys a lot of people who don’t belong to north India and/or don’t speak Hindi as their primary language.
Understanding the fact that India is extremely diverse with different cultures and languages might be a good place to start! Trying to impose your idea of “one nation, one identity” will always be met with pushback. -

Should I fast on this Mahashivratri?
First of all, sorry for your loss. A father daughter relation is always special and I cannot begin to imagine what you went or are going through. I wish Shiva will give you strength to get through this ordeal.
Secondly, Fast only if you absolutely can or willing. From what I learned Fasting is not mandatory even though it is recommended. Your Father is already with Shiva. Whatever you choose to do is for you to get close to him. If you don't want to, don't. Shiva will understand.
Thirdly, you mentioned good deeds. Thats the best step. Even if you don't believe in Shiva anymore, help the people around you and be kind. As a daughter's dad myself, I can asure you, your dad will be proud of you for that. Added bonus of this deed? Shiva, also known as Pashupathi, will be more pleased if you help other Pashu ( Human and animals ), instead of fasting or pouring milk on him.
What ever you choose to do, I wish you have a peaceful life.
