  5. Why were traditional houses in Uttarakhand and Himachal region made of stone and deodar wood, while in the rest of India, mud was mostly used?

    Soil is used on the floor over wood in traditinal houses in the hills. Use of wood is extensive as it provides better insulation and it was hard to transport building material back in the day, mainly because of poor road connectivity. As far as stones are concerned, they are better in dealing with erosion that the mud houses face during monsoon. Rains here could be notorious. Also, using stone slabs makes it structurally stronger to withstand harsh weather. All this is something I have heard from people and it makes sense to me. I do not have any evidence to prove this though.
