Normally I would say no. Being that trading with money you need to eat is not wise. Most professional traders that work for actual firms clear a nice fat flat salary before any bonuses. Why? Because it's important to keep you confidence during draw downs and if you are taking money out on good weeks..but then also taking money out on bad weeks.. this is bad math.

That being said... your situation is different. You are obviously a mature, level headed, risk orientated individual. You have plenty of capital to eat from while you try this out. You also have a retirement nest egg to fall back on if things go south in a hurry.

I say go for it! Just be careful and try to keep level headed. The largest drawdown I ever had was when I was laid off and decided to trade full time. It was a heart wrenching drawdown and that's why I share that caution with people attempting this kind of career change. The good thing is I had plenty of money set aside (like you) and I found a great new job and once I was employed again i made back my drawdown. I simply trade a lot better when I know I have disposable income. But that could also be just me, I would try it again given the opportunity.
