Why did Allahabad got renamed to Prayagraj instead of just Prayag?

Leave the debate whether the city should had been renamed or not for a second. It was always known as Prayag (Prayāga) as the ancient city and the hub of Gupta Empire. Then why did the Yogi government add a “raj” in it?
