All about hindu months
In our north india we use desi months atleast our elders still use them. Let's understand how they work. So, they are totally based on the moon. Moon usually takes 30 days to orbit the earth,in which it has two phases i.e. first is decreasing phase when moon starts reducing its size and then the increasing phase when it it starts increasing its size. The moon first decreases itself in 15 days and then no moon *(amaavaseya)* night comes and then it starts increasing for 15 days and then full moon *(purnima)* night comes. *When it decreases this phase is called ***badi*** or ***neyr pakh*** in punjabi* *When it increases this phase is called ***sudi*** or ***ChanaN pakh*** in punjabi* Now, our desi months start with badi phase when moon starts decreasing. So, the first date of desi month would be "badi based ekam/eko'n (in punjabi). Then it goes upto 14 day of badi and eventually on 15 day moon disappears and this is called (amaavaseya) or **(maseya in punjabi)** Now, from here moon starts increasing again so, on 16 day we sudi based ekam/eko'n (means 1st). Then it again goes for 14 days increasing and eventually we have full moon called (purnima) or **(punyaa in punjabi)**. Now, full moon is last day of month so from there a new month begins again withd decreasing moon. **More terms** *Sakraantii* or *sangraand in punjabi* :- so the first date of a month is called sakranti. People usually go to temples and gurudwaras on sakrantis every month. So, combining all over the months we have in totall 360 days (30 × 12) but sometimes moon takes more time to complete its orbit which eventually increase days in the year. Now, we have 12 desi months. (I am punjabi so I am writing them in punjabi only. Please share your language ones so that I can add them). Our new year starts with Chetar usually. |**Roman months** | **desi months** | :--|--: Mar-api | Chetar Api-may | vasaakh May-jun | jeth Jun-jul | haaR Jul-aug | sauN Aug-sep | bhaadro Sep-oct | assu Oct-nov | kataa Nov-dec | magar Dec-jan | poh Jan-feb | maag Feb -mar | phagan So, this is all about desi months/indian months. Our calender is perfectly based on lunar cycles. Btw let me also add date names here. They would be in punjabi. Date is called *tith*. 1st **eko'n** 2nd **dooj** 3rd **teej** 4th **chauth** 5th **panjmi** 6th **shaTey/sheymi** 7th **satey** 8th **atthey** 9th **naumi** 10th **dasmi** 11th **geyaaras/geyarmi** 12th **banaras/baarmi** 13th **teyras/teyrmi** 14th **chaudas/chaude** 15th **maseyaa or amaavaseya** Now increasing phase starts. Dates will be repeated and eventually **Punyaa or purnima** comes First post here!!! Thank you.1
