Stop loss or trailing stop - which offers the best downside protection?

I am new to trading and want to have an automated way to exit positions when they move to the downside. What is the best way to do this? One issue I don't understand how to handle - I find if a stock tanks after hours and opens up with a huge gap down what good do either of these do you as a trader?
