Need advice on community assessment & competing with Tier 1 ISPs
Hey everyone, I'm in the early stages of planning a WISP business in Tiruchendur specifically targeting rural communities within 15-20km of Tiruchendur. Looking for advice from experienced WISP operators and rural internet users. Current Situation: - Main town has Tier 1 ISP coverage (Airtel, Jio) - Several surrounding villages with potentially underserved areas - Aiming to understand the real connectivity gaps Key Questions: 1. What's the best way to assess actual internet needs in rural communities? (surveys, door-to-door, local forums?) 2. For rural WISP operators: How do you effectively compete with major ISPs at the edges of their coverage areas? 3. What are the most common issues rural customers face with existing providers? (helps me understand pain points) 4. Any recommended tools/methods for checking line-of-sight and potential coverage areas? 5. How did you validate demand before investing in infrastructure? My Initial Plan: - Start with mapping potential coverage areas - Identify dead zones and poor service areas - Connect with village leadership/community centers - Understanding local terrain challenges Any insights, especially from those who've started small and grown gradually, would be incredibly helpful. Also interested in hearing from rural residents about what they wish their internet provider would do differently.2
