Democracy in Kollywood
I think kollywood remains one of the most democratic and representative film industries in India, consistently showcasing a wide range of stories and voices. Diversity, with technicians and actors coming from different regions of Tamil Nadu and various walks of life. From deeply political narratives to urban tales and rural dramas, Kollywood has explored themes that reflect the state’s socio-cultural fabric. Films like Karnan, Lubber Pandhu and Vaazhl highlight this diversity. Stories about parts of TN we know exists but never knew in detail. Unlike Bollywood or other regional industries where nepotism and rigid hierarchies often dominate, Kollywood has consistently provided opportunities for outsiders to carve their niche. Directors like Mari Selvaraj and Arun Prabhu have risen to prominence by sharing unique, deeply personal stories.1
