Background verification in Arranged Marriages

I am curious to know how the background check happens for arranged marriage in recent times. In earlier times, most of the alliances came through common circle / relatives and people marry those in few surrounding districts. People are moving to different places including other states, north India & foreign and things are becoming more individualistic. Marriages have gone beyond the known circle to Pan Tamil (Tamils across). How does bg check happen?
