Fun fact
* The city of Surat was originally called Suryapur, which was a Hindu town that existed from 1500–1520 AD. * The city was founded by a Brahmin named Malik Gopi, who built an artificial lake called Gopi Talav in 1516. * The area he developed was called Gopipura in his honor. * The Sultan of Gujarat Muzaffar Shah II gave Gopi the title Malik for his contributions. * The city was unnamed for a long time, and after consulting astrologers, Gopi proposed to name it "Suraj" or "Suryapur". * The king changed the name to "Surat" in 1520, as he disliked the Hindu inclination of the name.5
