Are strangers meetup event in bookmyshow real?

So there's strangers meetup event in Surat on 11 jan and 17 jan I think. Event is called 'start a date.' I was planning to go there but when I asked my frnd he said that " farzi hote hai yeh sab, unke khud k log bhar lete hai waha pr". Now that started me thinking, should I go there? I am really trying to make new frnds here in Surat and thus looking for such events. Was this event in anyone's radar?
