Direct Stock Investing or Mutual Funds? Please Advise.

Hi all, I have been recently contemplating whether I should give up investing directly in stocks and turn to only mutual funds. Currently I am doing 3:1 investment in MF vs direct investing. My rationale here is that the majority of retail investors fail to beat the index over extended periods of time. Even fund managers might fail to do so, and that is the reason I am preferring index investing primarily. I also find it tedious to research and keep up with the individual companies I am invested in. Another point to consider here is that the amount I invest directly in stocks is a bit variable depending on the number of days I travel for my job. My question to the experts and veterans here is that is my thinking on the right track? What would you suggest for me to do?
