Hardware start up

It seems like starting a hardware startup and getting to economies of scale is quite challenging and capital extensive to get the project off the ground. Between the initial NRE costs, first run inventory and marketing costs. Is there any good advice on how to get an initial product its first few 100 units (electronics device). It seems like staying lean as a hardware startup is quite difficult.
