1099 contractor as LLC, and ISO stock options (I will not promote)

As I understand it, ISO can only be granted to individuals (Rule 422). 1099 contractors often form LLCs or S-Corps. If you want to grant ISOs to such a contractor, how do you do so? Contract with the company, but options to the individual? Something else?
