My take on community and lack of anything to do for young people in Sikkim
I grew up in Darjeeling (not a hostel), so I noticed few differences which I feel may be a factor in the current situation in Gangtok (since I am from here) , Sikkim as whole when our state and town should be theoretically thriving (as High Per Capita GDP, mountains, more opportunities to population ratio as our population is tiny compared to other states , fully organic) than Darjeeling (which has a history of political unrest and identity problems yet we don’t hear suicides as rampant there). My intention isn’t to say one is better but to just speak my opinion based on my experience. Kindly correct me politely if I have made an error. In Sikkim, I feel people kind of lack the sense of community, like I mean a community of people irrespective of where they come from and who they are or how much they earn… like people are much aligned to their own communal values… like they’re together on Communal grounds… and not as people of ‘Sikkim’… And another thing I have seen is how much, wealth is flaunted in Sikkim…. My friends from Sikkim flaunted how many cars they had… and that time when I was young I was suddenly kind of under the peer pressure of having more than 1 car…. Or I was seen as less than…. While in Darjeeling my friends didn’t even have 1 car… and it didn’t matter at all… but somehow in Gangtok it did…. My Gangtok gang all had Coach bags and iPhones…. I was kind of shocked…. And another thing is the lack of things to do….. apart from cafés and shopping centres, there is not much youth culture…. A small town like ours should be vibrant with arts, music, festivals…. But apart from Red Panda… here and there the communal festivities (which are good no doubt) there is nothing else honestly….. Idk if it’s right for me to say that these can contribute to something as tragic and multifaceted as a suicide cause people have personal reasons as well….. but I feel we need to have more unity as a community and not just on communal grounds…. Esp for the youth….1
