21 suicide cases in 15 days.
I'd posted sometime ago about depression being a bit too common in Sikkim. And with low fertility rates, and such rampant ending of lives, where are we headed as a community? What would happen to us, as Sikkimese populace, say 10 years down the line? Aging population, shrinking workforce, perpetually depressed youth. Not sure if mental health talks and press conferences shall mitigate this trend. Suicide needs to stop getting highlighted in news media. It may subliminally be providing an easy solution, the causes of suicide sometimes being way too flimsy. Ground level intervention and a reassessment of the general financial condition of people needs to be done. Peripheries won't get much help from counsellors or copy-paste programmes. It appears that we are all glam and sham on the outside, with a crumbling society on the inside, grappling with unspoken psychological trauma and hidden mental health issues.1
