Debate Club ?
Good day, everyone! Would anyone be interested in participating in or hosting debates to improve public speaking skills and expand knowledge? We used to have a club in Brussels called Brussels Debaters, so I can share how it worked. We typically met at a café or an open space (weather permitting ),where we wouldn’t be disturbed. Our debates followed the British Parliamentary style, though we weren’t too strict with the rules. The goal was to encourage people to speak, not to organize a formal competition. A topic would be introduced, with two opposing positions for and against. Eight speakers would be divided into teams of two. The rest of the attendees would be the audience, who could ask questions by raising their hands. Speakers could choose whether or not to entertain these questions. Each speaker had six minutes to speak uninterrupted, unless they opted to take questions. At the end, a judge provided feedback to each speaker and, if desired, announced a winner. We usually debated in English, as Brussels is an international city, but mixed languages are also welcome. Open to all kind of modifications anyone in? There’s more to explain, but if you’re interested, I’d be happy to share more details5
