The Arrogant Rickshawalas of Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC)
I want to bring attention to an ongoing issue with rickshaw drivers in BKC. These guys have created a monopoly, and their behavior is often downright arrogant and exploitative. Here’s what’s happening: • For a mere 2.5 km distance, they charge exorbitant rates. The standard shared charge should be ₹30 per person (₹90 for three passengers), but most of the time, they demand ₹40, which totals ₹120. • At times, they even make an extra passenger sit upfront, further increasing their earnings to ₹120 or more. • On some days, they have the audacity to charge ₹50 per person, even when there’s no traffic. • They drive rashly and carelessly, putting passengers and others at risk. For short trips like going to the metro station (just 1 km from many offices), they still demand ₹40. If you refuse, they rudely respond, “You can choose not to come, but the price is ₹40.” This blatant exploitation happens because they know they hold a monopoly and most people don’t have the time or energy to argue—they just want to get to work or home on time. What’s worse is that authorities do nothing to regulate them. They operate without fear, knowing they can get away with it. As commuters and consumers, we need to unite and take action against this behavior. Let’s hold them accountable! If you’ve faced similar issues, share your experiences and let’s find a way to bring this to the attention of the authorities. It’s high time we stop tolerating this exploitation and demand better transportation services in BKC.5
