• PSA from another post.. Mumbai Consumer Commission levied a fine of Rs. 25000 on Cream Centre, South Mumbai for charging a "mandatory" service charge to a customer, called the charge "illegal"

    The restaurant argued that it had displayed the fact that it levies a mandatory service charge in multiple places in the restaurant and hence they were within their rights to charge it but the Commissioner rejected this defence and called the charges 'illegal' Service Charge is VOLUNTARY. No restaurant can force you to pay it even if they disclose it in their menu or anywhere in the restaurant. You have a right to get it waived off if you want.
