Is it a good idea to move out of my own chawl house, to a rented flat, to raise my standard of living?
I am 33F, from Kandivali, Mumbai. I live with my mother, my dad passed away during COVID. I am the sole earning member. I own a 1RK + 1 house in a chawl in Singh Estate, in Kandivali East. If anyone is aware, this area is governed by the Thakur/ Singh empire. For the last 30 years that I have lived here, there has been no development, in fact the conditions have only worsened. The roads are never repaired. Cabs, sometimes even autos refuse to drop you inside. So many times even the online delivery people talk rudely. There is no maintenance, no cleanliness. Don't get me started about the rise in the Bihari population here. ( I'm sorry but that's the truth, they bring their family members and stuff them in a matchbox apartment, and they are not clean ) Everyday we find a new thela, or a vegetable vendor taking up the footpath! There is overcrowding. This all gets ten times worse during the monsoons almost like Dadar station.Vehicles are parked literally everywhere making it difficult for people to walk. This area is now become a Damu Nagar, Poisar equivalent! Since it's a chawl, the houses are separated by a single wall. There are vehicles parked everywhere. A few years ago we had a fire accident and it didn't take very long for the fire to spread. Overcrowding is a serious issue. The list of problems can go on and on. Due to all of this, I am always very conscious about calling over my friends, or incase if I get married, calling over anyone to this area. Since I am the sole breadwinner, it's difficult for me to buy a new house, however I feel now that I should rent a flat in a good locality in Kandivali/ Borivali area. I have always wanted to buy a car for myself but couldn't because we never had parking. I know chawls have a very good supportive factor when it comes to neighbours since my mother always has company when I am working or out of town. I am carefree, but I feel like I need to upgrade my standard of living now, and have my own private bedroom for once in my life! My current house has a sentimental value and it will always be special as it was my Dad's biggest investment, therefore I am a little hesitant on renting it out. I am always worried whether the tenants will keep the place in good condition. Also I recently renovated the place. I don't know how much rent I will be able to manage to find a good place to stay. This is going to be a big leap if I act upon it. Any ideas or opinions are welcome. How much is the rent for a 1- 2 BHK in Kandivali/ Borivali area? Is it a good choice to move out? What are the pros and cons? How do you know which tenant to chose? How should I determine my rent? PS: I earn around 8-9 LPA. TLDR: Planning to move out of my chawl house to rent a good flat in the western suburbs.1
