Change over decades
Hey Mumbaikars. I would like to know from the folks who lived and worked during 80s, 90s, 2000s and 2010s how Mumbai city has changed over the time. For the sake of simplicity let us restrict the boundaries till Mulund and Borivali. We will consider the following parameters. 1. Housing affordability. 2. Basic utilities like electricity, water supply and gas pipeline or gas cylinder. 3. Roads and traffic. 4. Public transport with comfort. 5. Weather. 6. Pollution. I will go first. 1. Mumbai was only affordable for upper middle class (top 10-15% of Mumbai population) and above since eternity. I think prices were reasonable (1/2 BHK) from late 90s to early 2000s but since then they have gone bonkers. Now the only way to afford a good house in Mumbai is if you are in top 1% earners in the country. 2. On this front (electricity, water supply, etc) I think Mumbai was always good as far as I can remember. I have not heard anyone complaining about these in Mumbai ever. 3. I hardly traveled by roads during 90s and 2000s but from the little that I did, I don't think the traffic was as bad as it is now. Some routes like LBS and Saki Naka and JVLR were congested but the rest of Mumbai was smooth to travel. This constant road congestion is a recent phenomenon from 2010s. 4. Public transport connectivity was always great whichever decade you pick thanks to extensive network of locals and BEST. However, the crowding that has become unbearable has probably also started in 2010s. I mean I don't think I faced issue while commuting in 2000s by local or BEST. 5. Weather was always bad but it has become horrible and unbearable every decade. 6. There was vehicular pollution when I used to go by rickshaw in 2010s but this haze due to dust is a very recent phenomenon, probably last 3 years since this construction boom.4
