What was “the” bike that made you fall in love with bikes in general?
It was the Yamaha RX100 for me. Long story short, my uncle (dad’s big bro) bought an RX100 in 1994 while stationed in Leh, and it was brought to Kerala via train. Whenever I came to India for vacays as a kid, the first thing I would want to do is to ride pilion on that bike with my dad. I loved the wine red color, but mainly I loved it for the sound. That 98cc single cylinder two stroke engine made only 11 hp, but it had a sound so melodious, nothing can top it for me. As years passed, the bike became less used, as my uncle preferred the ‘98 Classic 350 over the RX100. He did have the bike rebuilt in 2018 and gifted it to my cousin for getting his license. To say that he loved the bike was an understatement. When my cousin inherited the bike, he took such good care of it, as if it were his own kid. Unfortunately, stricter emission laws and the overall lack of preference to the RX100 eventually forced my uncle to sell it in 2022. The silver lining was that I had a chance to ride the bike to practice my two wheeler skills, 2 months before its sale. 3 years later, and I still miss it. All I hope is that the new owner is treating her well. For those curious, here’s a photo of the bike (taken from my cousin’s Insta highlights)1
