Test ridden the Triumph Scrambler 400 x, Speed 400 and T4
My thoughts after test riding the three motorcycles. First started with the scrambler. It's a tall motorcycle (I'm 5.11) and I can't flatfoot both sides. I can reach the ground with half of my foot on both sides. I was able to flatfoot both sides with a pillion though. Maneuvering the motorcycle was a task and pulling the motorcycle reverse while sitting felt tedious. The handlebar was wayyy wider so much that when steering the handlebar completely one side, the other side went out of reach and i had to stretch my arms to grab it back. This affects the turning radius also. Taking U turns is gonna take a while. The length and wheel sizes don't help either within the city. My observation is it's made for the scrambler format with mild off-roading capabilities like standing on the footrest etc and it truly shines for what it's intended for. Star of the show was the suspension. I'm 92 kgs and the speed bumps got absorbed effectively. Seats are very nice. Second was the speed 400 MY25. The handlebars were not as wide and the reach was bit lower and the rider triangle felt very natural for this format. The footrest is closer/higher compared to scrambler. Slightly crouched position but no so much (eg interceptor level). The motorcycle felt more nimble and in complete control because of the handlebar, footrest and seat positioning. It was just perfect for me. I was also able to flatfoot both sides. The suspension was very good though not as good as scrambler and absorbed speed bumps very well. Seats are nice and comfy. Turning radius is very good. Motorcycle felt racy and i feel Triumph has nailed this format as good as the scrambler if not more. Third the T4. Online reviews seem to favour this compared to speed. But honestly imo the worst of the lot. Suspension is hard and there is noticeable front dive when closing throttle. Seat is narrow and not as wide or roomier as the speed. The handlebar position is neither here nor there resulting in a very mixed feeling and the ergonomics just don't click atleast for me. Handlebar is wider than speed but not as wide as scrambler. It is also placed higher than speed but not as high as Scrambler. This changes the way you sit and with that footrest position it just felt all over the place. Triumph didn't do well in this format and it feels very generic and there are better options which can do better in this generic format of motorcycling (hunter, Duke maybe). The throttle response was also not as good as the other two. At last, went ahead with the speed 400. Flatfooting both sides played a key role. I'm not the kind of guy who 'believes tall motorcycling are a skill we can learn or learn to live with'. This is India and given the poor road conditions and people's (and sometimes cattles') adherence to traffic rules I personally like to be in control of the motorcycle at any cost. (OC)1
