Whats the science behind this?

Heard from my grandmother: that her mothers family leased their coconut palms to a "chethukaarn"and fed up of the frequent stealings from locals he decided to coat the 'kudam' with ghee which apparently is a poison and she claims that it caused the death of two of her neighbours.Has anyone heard about this?Can anyone figure out the science behind this?
