Profit over care? Healthcare capitalism in Kerala
A close relative of mine was feeling a little dizzy and consulted a doctor in Medical Trust, Kochi. After some tests, it was noticed that there was some ECG variation. They got admitted and the doctor seemed quite quick to recommend angioplasty surgery for my relative. We were a little doubtful, so we enquired with some doctor friend's we have. All of them said that there is no reason to do angioplasty right away. They mentioned that nowadays there is a lot of pressure on the doctors from the management of hospitals, like Medical Trust, to recommend such surgeries even if they don't find it necessary. That really shocked me. I have heard of doctors recommending unnecessary tests and examinations to make more money for their hospitals but God, I never thought they would go to the extent where they make their patients do an unnecessary surgery! Has anyone had similar experiences? How bad is the hospital scene here? Is this as rampant as I hear?4
