Cruel Ragging Visuals From Kottayam Nursing College, Kerala, India, where 5 senior Students brutally raggs a 1st Year Student.
In a deeply disturbing incident at the Government Nursing College in Kottayam, Kerala, five senior students have been arrested for subjecting first-year male students to severe physical and mental abuse. The victims reported being stripped naked, having dumbbells tied to their private parts, and being pierced with sharp objects like geometry dividers. The seniors also extorted money from the juniors to purchase alcohol and frequently assaulted them. These acts were often recorded on mobile phones, adding a layer of psychological torment through threats of public exposure. The prolonged suffering led some victims to confide in their parents, who subsequently alerted the college administration. Upon conducting a preliminary investigation, the college's anti-ragging committee found merit in the complaints and referred the matter to the Gandhinagar police. Following this, five senior students were arrested and charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1998. The accused were remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. In response to the incident, the college administration suspended the accused students pending further inquiry. The Directorate of Medical Education and the Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council were also notified. The college emphasized that, despite having active anti-ragging measures in place, the victims had not reported the abuse earlier, highlighting the challenges in detecting such incidents. This incident underscores the persistent issue of ragging in educational institutions, despite stringent anti-ragging laws and awareness campaigns. It highlights the need for more effective monitoring mechanisms, supportive environments that encourage victims to report abuse without fear, and comprehensive counseling services to address the trauma experienced by victims.
