What's your opinion on burning Union Carbide's waste in Pithampur?
The results can be dangerous. I live 8km away from Pithampur with my family in Rau. And, It horrifies me. People of Pithampur are protesting against it stating this is dangerous. Protesters were met with a lathi charge by the police. From the protesters, two tried to put themselves on fire. Context: The tragedy on December 2-3, 1984, at the Union Carbide Factory in Bhopal was a clear result of ignorance and a lack of safety precautions. This is a problem we see often in India. Even after the tragedy, the government tried to hide the scale of the incident. According to government figures, only around 3,700 people died. In reality, more than 20,000 people died in nearby major hospitals, as per their records. Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) is an extremely poisonous gas that killed around 20,000 people, injured approximately 600,000, and impacted countless lives. Before MIC release accident in Bhopal. Journalist Shri Rajkumar Keswani ji tried to warn the people of Bhopal. In fact, some minor gas releases were common in the plant. But, no local authority investigated anything. Instead of taking action, they ensured that every whistleblower was silenced. Now, govt wants to burn the waste of Union Carbide in Pithampur.3
