The Normalization of Misogyny on Instagram – A Growing Concern

Today, I came across a video by a popular Instagram page that conducts street interviews. The clip followed a familiar pattern: Women were asked, “Which celebrity would you cheat on your boyfriend with?” – as if cheating is just a casual thought for them. Men, on the other hand, were asked, “Would you cheat on your girlfriend?” – making them appear more morally tested. This kind of biased framing is everywhere on social media. But the real issue isn’t just the videos themselves—it’s what happens in the comment sections. ·   Misogynistic slurs are normalized ·   Teenagers (13+) are exposed to this unchecked toxicity. ·   Algorithms push content that sparks gender-based hate for engagement. Instagram is shaping the next generation’s perception of relationships, respect, and gender roles. If boys constantly see women being demeaned in viral videos and comment sections, they internalize those biases. If girls are repeatedly told that disrespect is normal, they may lower their expectations for how they should be treated. This isn’t just “internet banter” It’s shaping mindsets. So before we scroll past these videos, let’s ask: 1. Who is benefiting from this content? 2. How does it shape young minds? 3.  Should platforms do more to moderate these discussions? Social media is powerful. It’s time we start questioning how it’s being used to reinforce the wrong narratives.
