Is Arun Shourie the Opportunistic Hindu for Power?
His intellectual journey began with the book Hinduism: Essence and Consequence, where he blamed Hinduism for India’s problems. The Ayodhya movement and the changing political landscape of India saw him shift gears. Through books like Missionaries in India, Harvesting Our Souls, Hindu Temples, and The Ayodhya Reference, he began advocating for Hinduism. He even joined the Vajpayee government. During the 2002 Gujarat riots, he advised Vajpayee to remove Modi as Chief Minister. After BJP’s 2004 loss, he turned critical of the party and distanced himself from its pro-Hindutva stance. By 2009, he openly praised Sonia Gandhi, calling her “the most humane person.” Ahead of the 2014 elections, with Congress on shaky ground, he shifted back to supporting Modi. However, after being denied a prominent role in Modi’s government, he once again became a vocal critic. In his book Two Saints, he demeaned two revered Hindu figures, Sri Ramakrishna and Ramana Maharshi. Now, with Rahul Gandhi targeting Savarkar, he has announced a new book, The New Icon, likely aimed at disparaging Savarkar. A pseudo-intellectual whose sole ideology is power, he has ridden waves of opportunity—from the Ayodhya movement to Modi’s rise—while abandoning principles whenever convenient.
