Madhubala Betrayal Sequence
When RK’s betrayal sequence took place, I felt that it was emotional but didn’t hit as emotionally hard as it should have. It was but still not as much it could have. This could be because I already knew he was going to betray Madhubala, even though I wasn’t aware of the exact reason. The shock factor was not there for me, may be thats the reason but shock factor doesnt take away the emotional factor , the empathy you should feel towards madhubala?Drashti Dhami delivered a good performance in breakdown scenes after betrayal. Reason the betrayal didn’t feel completely emotional that it could have to me was that RK’s ego had always been an established part of his character. He had undeniably developed real feelings for Madhubala, but his inherent arrogance superiority complex and his ego remained intact. \*\*It never felt like he was meticulously planning revenge from the start—rather, it seemed like a moment where his ego took over his heart, making the betrayal feel more like a stubborn act of self-destruction rather than calculated cruelty.\*\* Interestingly, when you compare RK’s actions to Madhubala’s later revenge, where she dramatically risked her life to make RK realize his love, you can draw parallels to RK’s behaviour before his betrayal. One could argue that just like Madhubala did everything to push RK into accepting his feelings,he was doing same but it didnt feel like because \*\*RK’s own actions were driven by his ego as a defense mechanism against his emotions.\*\* He developed real emotions for madhubala, but his ego became a way to shield himself from vulnerability. in betrayal confrontations sequence , the way he explains how was he planning and the things were falling his way never seemed real, it all seemed that he is trying to show he was in absolute control (of his emotions) but he never was and was just pretending to fuel his ego to supress reality. he didnt plan anything from start unlikely as compared to madhubalas revenge case. That’s why the betrayal, while shocking ,it delivered to some extent but didn’t fully deliver the emotional punch it was meant to(towards madhubala character) Was it because I already knew it was coming, reducing the shock factor? Or was it because RK’s behaviour prior to the betrayal never truly hinted at revenge, making it feel like an impulsive decision rather than a well-planned move? Whatever the reason, the moment didn’t feel as deeply devastating as it should have, especially compared to the frustration I felt later when RK went to obsessive extremes, particularly during Madhubala’s kidnapping, while Sultan was being painted in an idealised light. At that stage, RK was portrayed more as a full-fledged villain, making me question whether he even deserved redemption. Ultimately, the betrayal didn’t feel like a well planned step but rather an ego-driven misstep which softened its impact to little extent but also added to the character depth of RK. Though vivian confrontation in betrayal sequence and drashti breakdown sequence performance was good.4
