Do We Really Support Good Content or Just Enjoy Illogical Drama?
Indian TV audiences often claim they want meaningful and well-written shows, but what actually trends on TRP charts tells a different story. Take Sony SAB, for example. It has given us genuinely well-made shows like Tenali Rama (a mix of history and humor), Madam Sir (women empowerment with comedy), and fantasy adventures like Aladdin, Baalveer, and Dhruv Tara. These shows tried to bring fresh storytelling, creativity, and logic into their genres. Yet, they often struggled with viewership. Meanwhile, Star Plus has completely ruined the fantasy genre. Their so-called “fantasy” shows like Divya Drishti, Nazar, and Yeh Jaadu Hai Jinn Ka were nothing but supernatural nonsense. Instead of world-building, logical storytelling, and creative elements, these shows relied on illogical tropes—Dayans flying, Naags shooting lasers, characters suddenly developing random superpowers, and villains surviving every possible death. These shows became more about absurdity than actual fantasy, making the genre a joke in Indian TV. Even in sitcoms, logic is often sacrificed. Sony SAB, despite its reputation for lighthearted content, sometimes adds bizarre scenes because audiences love illogical moments. Remember when Bapuji flew with balloons in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah? That week, TRP shot up to second place, but by the next week, it dropped back to 1.8. Similarly, Wagle Ki Duniya had to add scenes where Rajesh Wagle got superpowers just to grab attention. And then there’s the hypocrisy. When a genuinely good show airs, people nitpick small mistakes and criticize it endlessly. Ramayan, for example, is a legendary show with cultural significance, yet people focused on minor costume errors or small dialogue issues. But the same audience will sit through endless toxic serials like Anupama, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Ghum Hai Kisi Ke Pyaar Mein, Parineeti, and Bhagya Lakshmi without questioning their logic. These shows glorify manipulation, toxic relationships, and never-ending family politics, yet they dominate TRP charts. So, do we actually want good content, or do we just pretend to? Because, in the end, TV channels will only produce what gets them views. What do you think?2
