Why did Sunil Gavaskar score just 36 off 174 balls in the 1975 World Cup match against England when India were chasing 334?
So for context, England batted first and scored 334( first 300+ score in ODI history). In the second innings India batted out the entire 60 overs and scored 132 for 3, with Sunil Gavaskar scoring 36 runs in 174 balls showing absolutely no intent to win the game. Also when Sunny G was asked about his performance in this game in an interview, he got extremely defensive and blamed the bowlers for giving away too many runs, which made his innings look slow. Quite bizarre if you ask me. No hate for Sunny G, but Wouldn’t this be considered the most selfish innings by a top level player? I think even the commentator at the time called it the most selfish and disgraceful innings he had ever seen. Why do you think Sunny G played in this manner?1
