What happened to Ashwin is similar what was done to Dravid 12 years before
Ashwin has retired from the international cricket, and anyone with a hint of understanding about the game knows he hasn't retired cause he couldn't perform at the highest level. He is just victim of the aging squad which contains lots of other underperforming star duds. I am sure I am not the only one who feels retirement is forced on him, by the board, with groundwork being laid since NZ defeat ( here our batting cavalry was under question, but narrative was set to include aging players Jaddu and Ashwin for no reason). Aussie tour has been always a tough challenge for spinners (even lyon feels underperformer in the context). So to divert away the blame on star batsman's, Ashwin retirement not only defuse certain pressure on selection, but also forces fans into unlived nostalgia of Virat, Rohit. I remember Dravid was also forced into retirement similar ways despite of being best performer on ground, just cause aging players were being sidelined at that time. Failing team, and team management has played similar script to protect superstars, and their fandoms.4
