Yuwen No. 6: The Mango Variety You’ve Never Heard of but Should Know About.
Back in 1995, a fruit farmer from Yujing Township, Tainan, named Mr. Guo Wenzhong, set out to create new mango varieties. By crossbreeding Jinhuang and Aiwen (Irwin), he developed 19 different types, naming them Yuwen No. 1 to Yuwen No. 19. Among these, Yuwen No. 6 quickly gained attention for its exceptional taste and quality. The name reflects its roots in Yujing and honors Mr. Guo’s contribution. What makes Yuwen No. 6 special is its striking red skin, large size (weighing 659 to 1,000 grams), and its sweet, tender flesh that’s almost completely fiberless. It has a sugar content of 17 Brix, low acidity (0.16%), and a sugar-acid ratio of 94, giving it a balanced, pleasant flavor. Its seed is small, taking up only about 6% of the fruit's weight. On top of all that, it has a good aroma and better disease resistance than its parent, Aiwen. Since it’s still a newer variety, there isn’t much data yet on its yield or cultivation area, but it has already made a strong impression. I’m always keeping track of mango varieties like Yuwen, Yuwen No. 6, Dang Jakrapad, BN7, King of Chakapath, Red Prince, and Red Emperor, and so on.1
