Got fined for “damaging” my passport because of a bank stamp—feeling frustrated!
I recently booked an appointment to renew my passport since it’s expiring next year. For context, I’m on a student VISA. When I first traveled to the U.S., I exchanged $400 through SBI, and they stamped my passport to indicate the forex transaction. At the time, I didn’t think much of it. Fast forward to today: when I went to reissue my passport, I was charged an additional fine of ₹1500 for “damaging” my passport because of the stamp. I tried explaining to them that I wasn’t aware this would be considered damage, but they still made me sign an annexure form admitting I damaged the passport. I had no choice but to pay the fine. I then visited SBI to discuss this issue, hoping for some clarification/support. They basically told me to contest it with the Passport Office. Here’s my frustration: If the Passport Office considers this stamp as damage, there should be better communication with institutions like the RBI so banks don’t stamp passports in the first place. On the other hand, if the RBI considers it necessary (especially for students traveling abroad), the Passport Office should recognize this and not penalize us for something beyond our control. Has anyone else experienced this? It feels so unfair to pay a hefty fine for something that could be easily avoided with better coordination between these entities!2
