FAKIR SCAM ALERT!!!
Today, for the first time, I got scammed in Hyderabad, and I’m absolutely fuming. I was sitting in the car with my friend when a Muslim (only mentioned religion because it is relevant) fakir came over and tapped on the window. I already knew these guys were trouble, so I ignored him. But my friend rolled the window down and told him we didn’t have cash. The guy then pulled out a UPI QR code and asked for PhonePe. My friend, wanting to get rid of him, sent him 50. The fakir acted overly thankful, started “blessing” us with his weird stick, and filled the car with smoke, claiming it would remove my daridram (bad luck). He then realized the car was mine, came over to my side, and started focusing on me, claiming I had bad luck and he was cleansing it. By this point, I was annoyed but didn’t want a scene, so I played along just to end it. My friend had to leave as he was running late, but after he left, things escalated. The fakir grabbed my hand and tied a thread to it, even when I was trying to refuse. Then he started chanting some weird mantra while still holding my hand. At the end of it, he began talking about a “35 coconut offering” to Allah/fakir or something like that (couldn’t understand what he was saying). He was speaking a different language and his Hindi was hard to understand because of weird accent, but I knew he was about to demand money and I was right. He said one coconut was ₹30 and insisted I calculate the total and give the amount to him. At this point, I was furious but didn’t want to shout or cause a scene, especially because the road was quiet, and I noticed other fakirs nearby. They all looked like they were working together, and honestly, they looked like illegal immigrants, probably Bangladeshis or Pakistanis. I told him I didn’t have the money, but he wouldn’t let go of my hand. I found 200 in the car and gave it to him hoping he would leave, but he kept demanding more. He even told me to show him my phonepe balance. I firmly refused and told him to let go of my hand. He continued insisting, claiming he couldn’t break his promise to his god. I managed to find another 100 rupee note and gave it to him, telling him to curse me all he wanted but I won’t give another rupee. He finally let me go. I have to say he was giving the Hanuman idol in my car some creepy looks while saying those weird chants or mantras. I’m not someone who usually gets into politics or religion, but it’s times like these that make me feel BJP needs to come into power in Hyderabad and clean up these freaking illegals. No other party seems to care about this.2
