Staying with Inlaws good or bad?
I currently live with my wife in a flat near my office. It's not very big, but it suits our needs for now. However, with a newborn in the family, I'm starting to think about upgrading to a bigger space since property prices might increase over time. My wife suggested an alternative: building a floor above my in-laws’ property. Her father is planning to construct a ground floor for themselves within the next year. Personally, I prefer living in an independent house over a flat, as it offers more privacy and space for things I enjoy, like gardening. If we build our own floor, we’ll have a separate kitchen and maintain our independence to some extent. My in-laws are generally easygoing and don’t interfere much, though my mother-in-law occasionally gives me advice on things like maintaining a routine, eating healthy, and baby care. While I can usually handle it well, it can get a bit much when I’m dealing with a sinus attack. Here’s how I see the situation: Pros: We'll have built-in support for childcare when we’re at work. Likewise, we can be there for them when they need help. Living in an independent house would give me more privacy and space for gardening. Avoid kids yelling at door step in flat. Vandalism of my car as kids cycle in parking area. Nearby to my parents and school, college, friends. Cons: Potential unsolicited advice about routines, food choices, and lifestyle. Adjusting to living in close proximity to family might feel less private compared to a standalone flat. Addition of 1hr to 45 minutes travel time to work. What’s your take on living with in-laws under such arrangements?2
