Why is visiting large temples in India so stressful and hectic?

Shouldn't temples be the site of calm and serenity? Many temples on the other hand are badly maintained and the major ones are packed to the brim and extremely claustrophobic. The dirtiness is also a sight to behold. Many of the devotees have no civic sense and throw garbage like a dump yard. Most of the time we can't even see the deity. I can see rodents and cockroaches roaming here and there. The temple pond is also disgusting and filled with garbage. Most of the time the purpose of the visit is about completing the damn 'job' , rather than taking time to pray at the holy site.
